VinFast Consider to delay factory in North Carolina

VinFast announced in 2022 that it would build an electric vehicle (EV) and battery factory in the United States with an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. The company aimed to take advantage of the Biden administration’s efforts to approve subsidies for EVs made in America. Initially, the factory completion was planned for July 2024, but it was later pushed back to 2025. Now, VinFast is contemplating another delay, according to a Reuters source.

The loss-making company faces challenges in gaining favor with U.S. consumers. Despite selling fewer than 1,000 cars in North America last year, VinFast remains committed to its goal of selling 100,000 cars this year, twice as many as it targeted in 2023, as it expands abroad⁴. The factory's location in North Carolina's Chatham County has seen revisions to the size of the general assembly building, with the latest revision submitted in April and still under review by the county’s permits department. When VinFast initially announced its plans for the North Carolina factory in March 2022, U.S. President Joe Biden praised it as an example of his economic strategy at work.

Despite these challenges, VinFast continues to pursue its overseas plans, even in the face of weaker global demand for EVs and a price war. The company has also been dealing with legal issues, including a lawsuit in the U.S. for not paying rent on a showroom and investigations related to a fatal crash in California and alleged patent violations.
