Toyota to build EV battery in North Carolina from 2025
Toyota is making significant strides in the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company aims to start producing EV batteries at its upcoming factory in North Carolina next year. This factory will eventually build battery packs for Toyota's hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles. Let's dive into the details:
1. Factory Location and Progress:
- Toyota's North Carolina factory, which received an increased investment of $13.9 billion last year, is making progress on construction since breaking ground in late 2022.
- Sean Suggs, Toyota Battery Manufacturing President at the North Carolina complex, mentioned that the factory is scheduled to begin EV battery production in the first quarter of next year.
- The initial batteries will be used for a three-row EV produced at Toyota's plant in Georgetown, Kentucky.
- Approximately 300 team members are currently on-site each day, with around 500 more working at the headquarters location in Greensboro¹.
2. Factory Capacity and Components:
- The North Carolina plant is expected to produce 30 GWh (gigawatt-hours) of EV batteries annually.
- The factory consists of seven buildings, each featuring two production lines.
- In total, there will be 10 production lines for future battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid battery packs, along with four lines dedicated to building battery packs for hybrid vehicles.
- Components such as battery "cans" will be manufactured at an on-site supplier building called Fuji Springs.
- The facility will also include a full-time fire department, three drive-through bays, and other support structures.
3. Toyota's Approach to Electrification:
- Toyota has long advocated for a multi-faceted approach to electrification, including technologies like hydrogen fuel cells, hybrids, and combustion engines.
- While the company is investing in EVs, it doesn't believe battery electric vehicles (BEVs) will surpass gas vehicles as the most popular powertrain type.
- Toyota's commitment to hybrids remains strong, and it continues to defend its position in the market.
In summary, Toyota's North Carolina factory represents a significant step toward its electrification goals. By producing EV batteries locally, Toyota aims to contribute to the growing electric vehicle market while maintaining its commitment to a diverse range of technologies.
