Tesla offer LFP battery retrofits for earlier Model 3 with 2170 battery
Tesla is now offering lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack retrofits for earlier Model 3 vehicles that are still under warranty. This option is available for those vehicles that were initially equipped with the 2170 cell batteries. The LFP battery pack retrofit includes some upgrades to the suspension to handle the heavier LFP battery.
The LFP chemistry used in these battery packs is different from Tesla's nickel-based chemistry. While LFP chemistry is less energy-dense, it offers advantages such as being cheaper and experiencing less degradation when frequently charged to 100%. As a result, it has become popular for entry-level electric vehicles (EVs) and is now used in most of Tesla's Model 3 vehicles.
Here are some key points about the LFP battery retrofits:
1. Improved Range: The LFP retrofits reportedly result in slightly more range compared to the older battery pack.
2. Daily Charging: Owners can charge their vehicles over 80% daily without affecting the longevity of the battery pack.
3. Suspension Upgrade: Since the LFP pack is heavier, Tesla also upgrades the rear springs and dampers to handle the additional weight.
4. Faster Retrofits: LFP retrofits are apparently faster than waiting for the same battery pack with nickel-based cells.
5. Longevity: Tesla's batteries generally have good longevity, but replacements can still be necessary over time, especially for older vehicles with high mileage.
While currently limited to vehicles under warranty, it's possible that Tesla may eventually offer LFP battery replacements off warranty as the supply of the old battery pack diminishes. The pricing for such replacements will be interesting to learn when that time comes.
