PLUS, LLM agree to increase highway EV charging stations

PLUS Malaysia Bhd (PLUS) and the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) have taken a significant step towards promoting electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia. They have agreed to simplify the process of developing and expanding the number of EV charging stations along the PLUS highway. Here are the key details from this development:

  1. Charging Stations Locations:

    • PLUS and MHA will identify strategic locations at rest and recreation (R&R) areas and highway lay-bys along the PLUS highway for installing EV charging stations.
    • The government has also requested sufficient electricity supply at these approved charging station sites.
  2. Renewable Energy (RE) Usage:

    • Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), the utility company, is analyzing power supply sourcing methods and power usage over time to encourage the utilization of renewable energy (RE) when charging EVs.
  3. Business Models and Safety Guidelines:

    • The government is open to suggestions for new business models that optimize EV charging during periods of low electricity usage.
    • Port operator Northport (Malaysia) Bhd has raised safety concerns related to handling EV charging in the logistics sector. As a result, best practice guidelines for EV charging during logistics dealings will be developed within six months.
  4. Improving Procedures and Licensing:

    • The National EV Steering Committee (NEVSC), chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, discussed issues related to improving procedures and licensing for EV charging stations.
    • Fadillah emphasized the need to coordinate and facilitate relevant regulations to ensure smooth development and operation of EV charging stations nationwide while prioritizing safety.

This collaborative effort aims to enhance the EV ecosystem in Malaysia and make EV charging more accessible for drivers across the PLUS highway network!
