Miti maintains target of 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025, says minister
The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) remains steadfast in its goal to establish 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Malaysia by 2025. This ambitious target is part of the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint and aims to enhance the country's EV infrastructure⁶. Currently, there are 2,020 operational EV charging stations nationwide, and industry players are optimistic about achieving the set goal.
To facilitate this initiative, the government collaborates with various ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, and local authorities. Additionally, tax incentives are provided to support the growth of EV charging infrastructure. The government's commitment extends to ensuring that at least 30% of ultra-fast chargers in Malaysia are accessible to the public for car brands other than Tesla.
Speaking of Tesla, the recent opening of Tesla's largest supercharging station in Southeast Asia at Gamuda Cove is a significant milestone. The station features six Superchargers and 18 Destination Chargers, contributing to the overall EV charging network in the country. Tesla's holistic approach, combining charging infrastructure and car sales, aims to alleviate range anxiety and promote EV adoption.
As Malaysia continues its journey toward sustainable mobility, the concerted efforts of government bodies, industry players, and innovative companies like Tesla play a crucial role in shaping the future of electric transportation. 🚗⚡
