The Malaysian government is addressing range anxiety concerns among electric vehicle (EV) users by focusing on the provision of direct current (DC) charging bays. This strategy is part of a broader initiative to encourage the adoption of EVs and support long-distance travel. Here's how they are doing it:

- Increasing DC Charger Targets: The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti), along with the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) and the Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), are working on increasing the targets for DC chargers. They are examining and refining the feasibility of this initiative.

- Collaboration with Power Companies: To ensure sufficient power supply for these charging stations, a concession company will collaborate with Tenaga Nasional Bhd.

- Streamlining Approval Processes: The Malaysian Highway Authority is assisting the concession company and EV charging station operators to expedite the approval process for setting up these bays.

- Infrastructure Expansion: As of January 1, 2024, Malaysia had established 2,020 EV charging bays nationwide, with 429 being DC-type bays.

- Supporting Ecosystem: The government is also focusing on the automotive ecosystem, including the introduction of the Authorized Automotive Treatment Facility (AATF) initiative for orderly handling of abandoned vehicles and used automotive components.

- Battery Recycling and Remanufacturing: Guidelines for EV battery recycling and remanufacturing are being developed, based on existing standards, and are expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2025.

These steps are aimed at reducing the anxiety EV users may feel about running out of charge and being stranded, by ensuring that fast-charging options are readily available, especially for long-distance travel.
