Malaysia toward the electrify for vehicle

In 2023, a total of 10,159 electric vehicles (EVs) (including both passenger and commercial vehicles) were sold in Malaysia. This impressive figure represents a 386% increase compared to the 2,631 units sold in 2022. Additionally, hybrid vehicle sales also saw growth, with 28,055 hybrid units sold in 2023, up from 19,988 units in 2022. When combined, the total number of electrified vehicles (EVs and hybrids) sold in Malaysia in 2023 reached 38,055.

The trend toward electric mobility is evident, as the number of EVs sold in Malaysia has been steadily rising over the years. In 2021, only 278 units were sold, but this number increased tenfold in 2022 and nearly quadrupled in 2023. Over the past three years, a total of 13,068 electric vehicles have been sold, as recorded by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

These EV sales contribute to approximately 1.27% of the total vehicle sales in Malaysia for 2023. The government aims to achieve a more ambitious target of 20% electrified vehicles by the year 2030.

As the adoption of EVs grows, so does the infrastructure to support them. The number of public EV chargers has increased from 1,246 units to 1,434 units. Malaysia aims to have 10,000 public EV chargers by 2025. The availability of more affordable electric cars in the Malaysian market, such as the BYD Atto 3, Tesla Model 3, and Ora Good Cat, has contributed to this positive trend. Expect more affordable EVs to hit the market in 2024.

The road to sustainable transportation is well underway in Malaysia!
