Hyundai Motor Group accelerating EV development in Indonesia
Hyundai Motor Group's Executive Chair, Chung Euisun, recently visited Indonesia to strengthen the automaker's partnership with the country regarding electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen energy. During the visit, Hyundai Motor Group's CEO Chang Jae-hoom and adviser Sung Kim met with Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto. The Indonesian government is actively accelerating the development of EVs by preparing an EV development roadmap and offering relevant incentives to create a complete EV ecosystem in Indonesia.

Notably, Hyundai Motor Group is the only electric vehicle manufacturer with a localized production chain in Indonesia. In 2021, Hyundai and LG established a joint venture called HLI Green Power to produce EV battery cells. The following year, the South Korean automaker opened a manufacturing facility in Bekasi, Indonesia, which produces the IONIQ 5 EV. Hyundai Motor Group aims to expand its EV manufacturing capacity in Indonesia to over 250,000 units annually, positioning Indonesia as its major production center in Southeast Asia.
Interestingly, Tesla has also shown interest in Indonesia. Elon Musk visited Bali to launch Starlink internet service in Indonesia, and during his visit, Indonesia's Coordinating Minister of Investment, Luhut Pandjaitan, pitched the idea of a Tesla factory in the country. Musk responded positively to the idea. Last year, Tesla reportedly discussed a potential battery factory with Indonesian officials. Indonesia, being one of the world's largest nickel producers (an essential material for EV batteries), is a prime location for such a factory.
In summary, both Hyundai and Tesla are actively exploring opportunities in Indonesia's growing EV market, contributing to the country's efforts to promote sustainable transportation and reduce emissions.
