Cambodia can achieve 2050 EV targets if plan well implemented: report
According to a World Bank report, Cambodia has set ambitious targets for increasing the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads. The Cambodian government aims to achieve the following by 2050:
1. 40% of electric cars and urban buses
2. 70% of electric motorbikes
These targets are part of an effort to reduce carbon emissions. As of 2023, Cambodia has already registered a total of 1,335 EVs. To achieve these goals, the government has taken several steps:
- Reducing import duties on EVs since 2021 to make them more affordable compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
- Reforming vehicle import and usage regulations progressively to encourage the adoption of EVs.
- Implementing policies that require the mandatory retirement of gasoline- or diesel-fueled vehicles when they reach a certain age, thereby promoting the use of EVs.
- Recognizing that the transition to EVs in Cambodia will likely be driven initially by motorcycles and tuk-tuks.
Promoting electric vehicles not only contributes to decarbonizing transport but also aligns with Cambodia's ambitious carbon neutrality goal by 2050. Additionally, it can enhance the country's integration with regional and global supply chains, boost industrial development, and create jobs.
In summary, with a well-implemented plan and continued efforts, Cambodia is on track to achieve its 2050 EV targets and contribute to a more sustainable future. 🚗🌿
