In a recent TV interview, a representative from Bomba Malaysia cautioned electric vehicle (EV) owners against charging their vehicles during rain. Additionally, the representative advised EV owners to unplug the charging connector once the charging session is complete to prevent any mishaps.

However, let’s delve into the practicality of this advice. Truth be told, modern EVs are equipped with robust safety features, making it safe to charge them even in wet conditions. Reputable EV charger manufacturers design their products to withstand various weather conditions, including rain. To put this to the test, my colleague and I conducted an experiment.
Regarding the advice to unplug the charging connector, it’s sound guidance. However, most EVs, including the Dolphin, prevent you from engaging drive mode while the charging cable is connected. So, the risk of driving away with the cable still attached is minimal.
In summary, while the cautionary advice is well-intentioned, charging your EV in the rain is generally safe, thanks to the robust safety measures in place.
