1st Mass Market EV in the world and 1st Commercially available EV in Malaysia - Nissan Leaf

The Nissan LEAF has a fascinating history, especially in the context of Malaysia. Let's delve into its journey:

1. Tama (1947): Nissan's first zero-emission electric vehicle (EV) was the Tama, produced in response to petrol shortages in Japan. The Tama could carry four passengers up to 100 kilometers on electric power alone. Remarkably, it wasn't a concept car; 1,100 units of these innovative EVs were sold.

2. 1996: Nissan continued its research and development in electric vehicles. In 1996, they had a running EV that used a lithium-ion battery pack, making it the first EV to utilize such advanced battery technology. This breakthrough offered a range of up to 200 kilometers due to improved storage capacity. Nowadays, lithium-ion battery packs are commonly used in EVs by various manufacturers.

3. The Nissan LEAF: In 2010, more than six decades after the Tama, Nissan launched the world's first mass-market EV—the Nissan LEAF. This groundbreaking vehicle put the world on the path to zero emissions from motor vehicles and carbon neutrality. The LEAF changed perceptions about EVs, proving that they were not just suitable for golf course buggies or airport shuttles. It had powerful acceleration, excellent handling, and a spacious cabin for comfortable seating. Recharging was as easy as charging a smartphone, and fears of electrocution during rainy weather were unfounded. The LEAF's high-capacity battery pack allowed for longer ranges, and more powerful charging stations reduced recharging times.

4. Malaysia's LEAF Journey:
    - 2013: The original Nissan LEAF model was introduced in Malaysia.
    - 2019: The second-generation Nissan LEAF made its debut in Malaysia as a fully-imported (CBU) model from Japan. Unfortunately, it didn't qualify for incentives under the current Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) scheme.
    - 2019: The latest model, with dynamic design, more power, and an extended range, was priced at RM188,888 on-the-road without insurance.
    - 2023: Nissan selling updated Leaf at RM168,888 on-the-road without insurance.

Nissan's commitment to electric mobility continues, and the LEAF remains a pioneer in the journey toward a greener, more sustainable future.
