Ikea Foundation backs emerging market EV push with US$100m grant

The Ikea Foundation has indeed made a significant contribution to the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs) in emerging markets with a US$100 million grant. This funding is part of a global initiative called the "Drive Electric Campaign," which aims to accelerate the uptake of EVs in developing countries.

The grant will support efforts to overcome common barriers to EV adoption, such as limited charging infrastructure and the absence of EV-friendly policies. The goal is to create favorable market conditions that will attract both public and private investment. This initiative, known as the "Leapfrogging Partnership," focuses on helping countries like Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, and South Africa transition directly to electric vehicles, bypassing traditional gasoline-powered transport.

This move by the Ikea Foundation is one of its largest charitable donations to date and could potentially save around 43 gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) by 2050. The success of similar electrification projects in India, where the electrification of last-mile delivery for parcels in urban areas has seen significant growth, serves as an encouraging precedent for this campaign.

The broader impact of this initiative is expected to extend beyond environmental benefits, potentially spurring advancements in battery technology, reducing costs, and enhancing storage capacity, which could positively affect over 10 sectors of the global economy.
