EV Selling not as experts predicted? Analysis by Forbes

Electric vehicles (EVs) have indeed seen increased sales over the past few years, but the rapid push for massive EV adoption by 2030 has encountered some challenges. Let's explore the reasons behind this and why consumers are not adopting electric cars as quickly as anticipated:

1. Slower Growth in EV Sales:

   - In the US, EV sales have risen steadily since 2016. By 2022, over 800,000 EVs were sold, compared to around 65,000 in 2017.

   - However, the growth rate has declined. In the first half of 2023, EV sales increased by 51%, which is lower than the 71% growth during the same period in the previous year.

 

2. Tesla's Challenges:

   - Tesla, the market leader with over half of all EV sales, recently reported its lowest quarterly profitability in two years. This led to a significant decline in the company's stock value.

 

3. Mercedes Benz's Delay:

   - Mercedes Benz announced that it won't meet its 2025 deadline to have EVs (including hybrids) make up 50% of all sales. The reason cited is lackluster demand for electric-powered vehicles.

   - The company now aims to achieve this goal by 2030 instead.

 

4. Consumer Concerns:

   - Charging Infrastructure: Worries about charging infrastructure persist. Consumers want convenient and accessible charging stations.

   - Vehicle Pricing: EVs are still relatively expensive for most people, even with government incentives.

   - Tax Credit Rules: Complex tax credit rules can confuse potential buyers.

 

5. Government Policy Changes:

   - In the UK, the planned ban on gasoline vehicles was postponed from 2030 to 2035.

   - These policy shifts impact consumer confidence and purchasing decisions.

 

While EV adoption faces challenges, automakers continue to navigate the evolving landscape, striving to balance production, demand, and consumer preferences. Despite these obstacles, the automotive industry remains committed to advancing EV technology, addressing infrastructure gaps, and promoting awareness. As charging networks expand, costs decrease, and consumer education improves, we can expect a more rapid transition to electric mobility in the coming years .
